How to Choose a Perfume: Find Ur Signature Scent

October 21, 2026  /  3 min read

The Par'Du Discovery Set with five fragrance bottles

Most people choose a perfume the way they choose a song on a speaker: in a rush, in a noisy place, after a few seconds. Then they wonder why it never feels right at home. A signature scent deserves a slower approach. Here is how perfumers and fragrance lovers actually do it.

Start with scent families

Every fragrance belongs, loosely, to a family. Knowing which ones u gravitate toward narrows the search at once.

  • Fresh: citrus, green notes, aquatic. Clean, bright, energising.
  • Floral: jasmine, rose, peony. From airy to romantic.
  • Woody: sandalwood, cedar, patchouli. Warm, grounded, elegant.
  • Amber and spice: resins, spices, vanilla. Rich, enveloping, memorable.
  • Gourmand: coconut, vanilla, sweet notes. Comforting and soft.

Think about what u already love: a flower, a spice, a place, a fabric. Ur favourite things usually point to ur family.

Understand top, heart and base

A perfume is not one smell. It is a story told in three acts.

  1. Top notes are the opening. Bright and light, they fade within minutes.
  2. Heart notes form the character, appearing as the top fades.
  3. Base notes are the deep finish, the part that stays on skin for hours.

That is why the first spray tells u very little. Judge a fragrance by how it ends, not how it begins.

Test on skin, and wait

Paper strips are fine for a first impression, but fragrance reacts to skin chemistry. The same perfume can smell sweeter on one person and sharper on another. So:

  • Spray on ur wrist or inner elbow, not on paper alone.
  • Test no more than two or three at once, or ur nose will blur them.
  • Walk away and give it at least 30 minutes to reach the heart, and a few hours to reach the base.

Think about when and where u will wear it

Light, fresh compositions suit warm days and the office. Deeper, richer ones shine in the evening and in cooler weather. Many people end up with two or three fragrances, one for each mood, rather than a single signature.

Do not let gender labels decide

Scent has no gender. It is a feeling, and marketing has simply taught us to look at the aisle instead of the notes. Every Par'Du fragrance is intentionally gender-neutral. Choose by the story, the notes and how it feels on ur skin.

How the Par'Du collection maps to scent families

The Beginning Collection follows one transformation across five chapters, and each one lives in a different family:

  • Prelude: floral and soft musk, with mandarin, jasmine, peony and vanilla.
  • Rise: fruity musk, with lychee, saffron, vanilla and ambergris.
  • Dawn: creamy woods, with coconut, vanilla and balsamic woods.
  • Awakening: powdered amber, with labdanum, iris and sandalwood.
  • Unfold: spiced leather, with patchouli, cedar and sandalwood.

The smartest way to decide

Instead of guessing from a description, sample. The Discovery Set holds all five fragrances in travel size, so u can wear each one on a real day, in real life, before choosing. And if u would rather be guided, the Du Quiz matches ur mood and personality to a scent.

The right fragrance is not the one everyone loves. It is the one that feels like u.
